Throughout history, psychics have maintained an ambiguous and somewhat controversial reputation in society, the media, and common households. Some people believe that psychics are just a big hoax that have been created to rip people off. Other opinions vary greatly: many people believe in the power of a psychic, and some religions commonly view a psychic as being a prophet of their god.
Psychic reviews are often written to showcase one’s beliefs in the power of fortune telling, horoscopes, and dream interpretations. Sometimes, a detailed and explicit review of one’s opinion will manage to convert others into believing in the power of a psychic.
Society often views these supernatural beings as being plain frauds. Works of literature have promoted the authors’ opinions on psychics and their takes on the latter’s profession. One work of literature that has provided such context is The Bluest Eye, written by Toni Morrison. The Bluest Eye consists of a chapter that summarizes the life of a man with the title of “Reader, Adviser, and Interpreter of Dreams”. The man, Soaphead Church, is revealed to be a fraud at his profession. He merely involves himself in his work to earn money and, in a sense, to defy God.
Although he himself knows that he can not perform any miracles or works of God for his client, he chooses to let them believe that he can. In a way, this chapter reveals Toni Morrison’s take on psychics. She is skeptical of their work, but is at the same time intrigued in the working of their minds. What does it take for an average person to convert his or herself into fooling others of their nonexistent supernatural powers? In the case of The Bluest Eye, a psychic-review of preternatural in the form of literature, money is the main reason for entering the field of this medium. However, skeptical reviews of psychics also reveal that there is a sense of longing towards God. In a sense, Morrison shows that Soaphead Church is using his job to overpower God, but he may just be subconsciously performing his fake miracle acts in order to get a higher being to notice him.
